I have a long, successful association with technology. I’ve used its tools to develop software, learn at a distance, and teach adults online. But applying technology to these endeavors was largely a requirement to achieve the pre-determined goal. The pandemic seems to have provided us with expanded opportunity to connect and recharge with professional peers via web-based conversations. And it was in one such conversation that I learned of Open Education Resource universitas (OERu’s) free micro-course, Digital literacies for online learning (LiDA101). This course is one of four micro-courses that form part of Learning in a Digital Age. Pathways are provided to achieve a badge or certificate for participation as well as micro-credentials and formal academic credit.

Why now? Why this course? The time is right. Like many others, I’m spending a great deal of time at the keyboard communicating with colleagues and managing my professional responsibilities. I’ve decided to explore some of my own interests. The LiDA101 course caught my attention because it focuses on developing a Personal Learning Network (PLN). The opportunity to build a digital network that explores topics of interest to me with a diverse group of like-minded individuals was simply too good to pass up.

Do I need a class to develop a PLN? While I can surely access available PLN resources, the ability to do so with a cohort of individuals who can share experience and give advice and encouragement should be a better experience. That’s the plan as I begin this endeavor. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences as I move through the course and build my PLN.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations related to PLNs, please add your comments.

I have the best job designing accessible higher ed learning experiences, guiding adult learners on their academic journeys, and coaching faculty in their application of effective teaching strategies.
